Lucky 13th birthday for Bob the Squirrel

Today is Bob the Squirrel’s 13th birthday.  Lucky or not, like Tom Hanks as Astronaut James Lovell in the film Apollo 13 says, “…it comes after twelve, hon.”

There isn’t too much more I can say about my relationship with Bob that hasn’t already been said… so I won’t spend multiple paragraphs reflecting.  I was 27 years old when we met.  I had no real responsibilities, no real focus and no real idea of what the future may hold.  Fast forward 13 years and the only things that have changed are the age and the responsibilities.

Bob was there then, he’s there now and will always be there.

It’s all flown by at supersonic speeds.  I created him in February 2002, broke the sound barrier and haven’t stopped flying since.  It hasn’t always been easy, but he’s always been there.  He’s my pal.  He’s my brother from another species.  He’s my imaginary friend with a better imagination that I have.

Happy birthday dude.  Clean up when you’re done.

If you’re in Rome, NY on Sunday…

On Sunday, February 8th, there will be a gathering at Franklyn’s Field in Rome, NY to build a large ‘Bob the Squirrel’ snow sculpture & we need many hands!

Those wonderful volunteers who show up will work together to form the snow mound and I will take it from there carving out the the ‘Bob’ details.

Plan to be there by 10am, but stop by throughout the day to help out & see the progress.  This will be something cool to tell everyone about.

For some added fun, we’ll be collecting dog & cat food for the Rome Humane Society, so bring a little something with you! ‪#‎RomeNYIsCold‬ ‪#‎LetsHaveSomeFun‬ ‪#‎Brrrrrr‬ ‪#‎BobTheSquirrel‬

More Appreciation that I EVER expected…

appreciationSo I’m sitting in my morning meeting at the Daily Sentinel… mid-meeting, the conference door opens.  In walks my wife (who also works for the newspaper) along with the ENTIRE office.

In her hands, hot off the presses, was this.  A four page spread about Bob, me and what the strip means to fans across town and the world.

Yet again, I am struck speechless.  I honestly didn’t know what to say at that moment… or even now.  I want to thank everyone involved with this… from the fans, the advertisers, the salespeople, the newsroom (Nicole Elliott– the mind of a squirrel… weird place, huh?) the designers, the pressmen… everyone.  This is one Squirrel Appreciation Day I will NEVER forget.

If you want to read the articles in this special edition, they can be found right here.

Thank you.

Through the windows this week…

In case anyone was wondering, all of this week’s daily strips are being drawn from the outside. That is, the story takes place in the house while you look through our windows on it. So, as a reader you’re looking though a panel, through a window to the story.

Real artsy stuff, huh?

I knew that Master of Fine Art diploma on my wall would come in handy. Maybe you can see it through my window this week.
