that funny flux feeling…

There’s tons of snow on the ground right now.  There’s so much snow that I can’t even begin to think about when it’ll melt.   My money is on Memorial Day.

After the puppet, the semi-failed snow sculpture and assorted other projects that have yet to leave my head, Bob is in flux.  More specifically, I am in flux.  After the flurry of activity I realize that the fuel gauge is tap dancing near empty.

‘ve been doing this long enough to know how this goes.  I just need to recharge.  Bob is not going away… he’s just in flux.  He’s waiting for that next adventure to begin.  He’s waiting for a reason to come out from under that blanket… the warmest day we’ve had in the last week barely made it into double digits.

If a definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over yet expecting different outcomes, what is the cure for that?

As always, my Patreon campaign is still rolling along.  Swing by on your lunch break and check it out.  The more patrons, the more prizes!  I’ve added a new goal level.  The masses rejoice!

Lucky 13th birthday for Bob the Squirrel

Today is Bob the Squirrel’s 13th birthday.  Lucky or not, like Tom Hanks as Astronaut James Lovell in the film Apollo 13 says, “…it comes after twelve, hon.”

There isn’t too much more I can say about my relationship with Bob that hasn’t already been said… so I won’t spend multiple paragraphs reflecting.  I was 27 years old when we met.  I had no real responsibilities, no real focus and no real idea of what the future may hold.  Fast forward 13 years and the only things that have changed are the age and the responsibilities.

Bob was there then, he’s there now and will always be there.

It’s all flown by at supersonic speeds.  I created him in February 2002, broke the sound barrier and haven’t stopped flying since.  It hasn’t always been easy, but he’s always been there.  He’s my pal.  He’s my brother from another species.  He’s my imaginary friend with a better imagination that I have.

Happy birthday dude.  Clean up when you’re done.

Snow Bob… the aftermath.

It was colsnow_frank_02082015d yesterday, the day of the great Snow Bob build.  I’d spent the previous morning build a practice squirrel in my backyard… with mixed results.  The biggest factor was the snow.  There was plenty of it, it was just all wrong for building.  Skiing?  sure. Squirrels?  Not so much.

I wasn’t totally prepared, protection wise for this build.  I was wearing three layers of clothing all over, and yet water and cold still found their way to my skin.  It really was cold.  It was reeealy cold.

In the end, the design of the sculpture had to change.  The material we were dealing with was completely uncooperative, no matter what we did.  I fashioned some semblance of a figure… in order to have something in place to go back to when the conditions very slightly more favorable.

Even though I was stopped by factors beyond my control, I still felt as though this was a failure.

Of course, I will go back and finish this.  But, walking away with cold, sore muscles didn’t hurt me as much as not finishing.  Even worse:  not finishing it the way I had originally intended.

But there is the lesson.  Sometimes you have to improvise on the fly.  Sometimes you have to switch gears and take a direction not on the map.  Sometimes, you can’t feel your hands and feet… whatever the sometimes is, you finish what you start.

I’d like to thank the core group of awesome people who came to help.  Kathy Perry, The City of Rome for access to facilities, Lori Colasanti Frieden, Sheila Feldman, Mike Colangelo, Sr., The Libertellas, Mayor Fusco and his wife, my wife Lezley, my daughter Lauren and all her friends.

I’ll get this squirrel done before spring.  But before that, I’ll get myself some snowpants.

Snow Bob 2015 – Update!

02042015_snow_bob_rendering

UPDATE!  The City of Rome has volunteered the use of several recycling bins for making snow blocks!

The more people that show up on Sunday, February 8, 2015, the bigger the Bob!

The fun will start at 10am on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at Franklyn’s Field, N. James St., Rome.  Bring any snow moving tools (shovels, carts) you want to use.  My idea is to make snow blocks in the general shape of Bob and then I’ll carve them out.  I just need help moving the snow.

Additionally, we’d also like to collect any kind of donations in the form of supplies for the Rome Humane Society.  PLEASE NOTE: Bringing a donation is not required to help with the sculpture.

Hopefully the snow is packy on Sunday!  I’ll be posting photos throughout the day documenting my process.  Where once there was snow, there will be squirrel.
